Finn Madsen and Johan Gernandt launched Madsen Law Firm, with offices in Stockholm and Sweden’s third largest city Malmo on in January 2017.
The pair both has considerable experience as commercial lawyers and from serving as arbitrator and counsel in international arbitrations in Sweden and elsewhere as well as from litigation in state courts. They have been working together at Vinge, one of Sweden’s largest law firms, for the past eight years. Finn Madsen, being a member of Fraudnet also specializes in matters realting to asset tracing and recovery.
Malmo and Stockholm-based Madsen has been a partner at Vinge since 1993. Before that, he was general counsel at a Swedish commercial bank and served as judge in the Swedish district and appellate courts.
Madsen is the author of a commentary on the Swedish Arbitration Act and SCC rules, which has been published in English, Mandarin and Swedish and is now in its fourth edition.
Madsen has an honorary doctorate, bestowed on him by the faculty at Lund University for his contribution to Swedish international arbitration law.
Gernandt joined Vinge in 2009 after 17 years with Gernandt & Danielsson, which is now also among the largest commercial law firms in Stockholm. He chaired the board of the SCC Arbitration Institute between 2006 and 2012 and has also chaired the general council of Sweden’s Riksbank.
He is known for his China-related work – including acting as counsel for Chinese food and beverage group Wahaha in one of the largest Sino-Western disputes to date, with its estranged French joint venture partner Danone.
At the 60th anniversary of China’s oldest arbitral commission, CIETAC, last year, Gernandt was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his work to develop its arbitration offering.
He has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by the law faculty at Stockholm University for his achievements in commercial law and arbitration.
